January 2013 Preparedness. . . Fuel

On the list of 100 items to disappear first in an emergency we find FUEL listed in connection with warmth, light and cooking.  Even generators cannot work without fuel.    Check your supplies and replenish and freshen your fuels.  Experts have advised we should leave all fuel for cooking purposes.  Remember there are resources for cooking that help conserve fuel even for cooking.  Strive to eliminate the need for explosive and dangerous fuels. (In some parts of Utah you cannot store more than 25 gallons of flammable liquids legally and a there is a 500 lb. limit on flammable gas, such as propane and butane.)  A "rocket" stove for instance uses very little fuel and the fuel is wood.  A cord of wood will last years for this type of cooking.  Our Wonder Ovens are also a great resource for conserving cooking fuel.  Solar cooking works great on a sunny or partly cloudy day but on a totally cloudy day would be almost useless.  Save your non renewable fuel sources for those cloudy days.  Remember: RENEWABLE sources of energy include 1- body heat, 2- solar 3- wind 4- The Holy Ghost;  NON RENEWABLE sources of energy include 1- wood/paper 2- coal 3- propane 4- oil 5- gas. The Lord wants us to be responsible and independent (see D&C 78:14).  When we are ready we are prepared to help others.
